The building above will provide transitional housing for mentally challenged clients of Human Services in New Castle. OOR Mercer did interior framing, insulation, installation and finishing of dry wall.

Richard Kesserling heard about the OOR program during his incarceration at the State Regional Correctional Facility at Mercer. Through his counselor's recommendation, he was able to join the Carpentry program offered by OOR.

Richard was pleased with being accepted on OOR as he was trying to find a skill that would help him once he returned to civilian life.

At the beginning of his time on OOR, he said that it was frustrating because he did not have the basic skills needed in the construction field. As time went on and his knowledge developed, he was able to do more and at an increased pace. Richard com-mented that he is able to learn more by doing hands-on work as opposed to just reading a book.

While on the CReW, Richard worked at Human Services in New Castle, a non-profit agency, on a renovation of an old building now used as transitional housing for the mentally challenged. On this project he learned about framing and dry walling. The
next job was a bathroom addition for an elderly couple where he did roofing, framing and vinyl siding. Richard was also involved in constructing two wooden handicap ramps. (See pictures on this page.)

He said that the time spent on the program was helpful, because in the beginning he had no job skills and OOR gave him a foundation to expand on.

He said that over all, the time he spent on the CReW was a good experience and he would recommend it to others. Also, he gained confidence in knowing that he can do this kind of work and that the program was a stepping stone to further his knowledge.

Richard will be looking for a position in the construction field. Through his new knowledge of construction, he has found a potential job lead-- working for a roofing crew.

He said that it made him happy to be able to help people who needed our assistance.
