Roberdeau Project Wins Second Award This Year |
The OOR Huntingdon project at Fort Roberdeau in Blair County has been honored for the second time this year. At their annual dinner meeting on Nov. 11, the Blair County Historical Society awarded an "Excellence in Historic Preservation" award to the rehabilitation of the circa 1860 farmhouse at the Fort Roberdeau Historic Site. Peggy Goodman, Executive Director of Fort Roberdeau Association and Dave Kyler, OOR Huntingdon Site Manager accepted the award. Gerry Bickle, Carpentry Instructor and Gail Mull, OOR Vice President of Operations and Programs, also attended the dinner. |
Mrs. Goodman referred to the extensive work done on the house, noting that the OOR crew completed 90% of the renovation. She said, "I’d tell Gerry about an idea I had and ask if we could do it. He’d just look at me. He’d come back a few days later and say that he had figured out how to do what I wanted." Kyler commented that more than 100 inmates had participated in the restoration over a period of six winters, adding that most of them are now working and paying taxes. Last May, Dominion Peoples presented OOR with their "Community Impact" award for the same project. |
