Before I worked for OOR, I was a labor foreman at SCI Cambridge Springs. The main difference between the two jobs is that when you work for the DOC they are inmates. When you work for OOR they become trainees.

For the seven hours they are away from the prison, trainees know that they are learning a skill which they can use when they leave. They don't leave with their heads down. They leave with their heads up, knowing that they have accomplished something.

This is why I like my job. Because we at OOR do make a difference in their lives--for the better.

This past summer OOR trainees completed over 18,500 square feet of roofing, mostly on two story, steep roofs.

I have been asked by shingle delivery drivers if the women will be off-loading the truck and how long they will take. The average 20 square drop has 60, 80 lb bundles. It takes about 20 minutes for the women to stock a roof. Drivers leave impressed at their ability to place the load on the roof in a fast, safe and organized manner.

Every day's work is different, but the look on their faces is always the same-a look of pride.

George Dickey, Instructor

I have been Site Manager at SCI Cambridge Springs and SCI Albion for approximately two years. Prior to taking that position, I was the Instructor at SCI Albion.

My first observation of a women's crew was how enthusiastic they

were to be working on construction projects. It was readily apparent that they were every bit as capable of completing these projects as the men were.

What they may lack in physical ability they make up for in teamwork. The majority of the women easily grasp the construction techniques presented to them and apply them to completing the projects.

I believe the OOR program at SCI Cambridge Springs to be as beneficial, if not more so, to the women as it is to the men whom we train in our other six divisions.
