Deputies Assess OOR Value

by Paul Smeal, Deputy for Facilities Management

OOR. Operation Outward Reach is so much more than the name implies. The inmates assigned to the crew are allowed to see a community from a completely different prospective. The inmates will view individuals who are so much less fortunate than they. Most work completed is for citizens who would not be able to afford a new porch, roof, or paint if it were not for the inmate labor.

Inmates can and normally do learn numerous tasks about home repair. Although some inmates may not seek employment in a related trade upon release, the knowledge and experience gained about home repair could prove invaluable as it relates to their own home. The ability to complete home repairs could save an inmate thousands of dollars throughout their lifetime upon their return to the role of a citizen in a community.

Yes. OOR is so much more.

Shown here, the OOR Crew is at work on the Corrections Industries addition project. The project will contain office space and a training room. SCI Cambridge Springs plans to host regional training sessions in this area.

OOR is a program that many women at SCI Cambridge Springs strive to participate in because of the multiple benefits that it offers. The women have the ability to learn new skills in a non-traditional work area that they can utilize when they are released, either as a career or in everyday situations.

The women give something back to the community by helping those who are less fortunate financially and are able to see the results of their labor and how it helps others. They are given the opportunity to receive positive feedback regarding their work through the local newspaper, letters of appreciation and being verbally thanked for a job well done.

The program promotes self worth and a sense of accomplishment. It bridges the gap between incarceration and the community and assists with the transition of reentry. It is a worthwhile program that benefits the incarcerated women, the DOC, the surrounding community and the individuals whom OOR assists.
