Graduate Charts A Steady Course

Susan Easterly has followed a steady course since she completed
the OOR program at SCI Cam- bridge Springs in August 2004.
She went to an Allentown area Community Center, got a job at
Holencik Roofing, Inc., passed the test for Certified Installer of
GAF roofing, completed her time at the center in June 2005 and
moved to a residence closer to her job.
According to Ruth Wuchter, Office Manager at Holencik, Inc.,
Easterly is the first woman roofer they have hired, although not
the first woman to try it. "When she came in to apply we were
really excited because she had experience," she said.
Susan gained that experience as a trainee on the OOR program.
She had worked at the warehouse at SCI Cambridge Springs, but when
she climbed on a roof, according to OOR Instructor George Dickey,
"She was one of the few women who actually enjoyed tearing off and
drying in roofs." As Ruth Wuchter put it, "Susan seemed to be cut
out for this kind of work." |

Easterly said that she was nervous when she was hired, but that
they treated her like one of the family and she settled into it.
Preparing for the GAF certification test required "a lot of
reading" and after three months on the job, she was ready.
Easterly's supervisor Adam Holencik said that she is always
trying to improve herself. "A lot of people are here to get a
paycheck, but she is looking for a career." He has been impressed
by her willing- ness to take anything on and do it to her best
ability.
"I learned a lot from Mr. Dickey and Mr. Holder (OOR staff),
she commented. What she learned while serving her time in prison
was not to give up. "There's always hope," was her conclusion.

Capital Campaign Formally Begins
On
May 20th at an awards luncheon, Jim McDonough, Board Chair,
announced a formal beginning to a statewide Capital Campaign. "OOR
needs to raise enough monies to support the building of three
training and tool storage facilities at SCI Cresson, Albion and
Cambridge Springs. In addition, we need new central office space
and the rehab of a training complex in Hempfield Township."

James McDonough
The total cost for the project is expected to top $1,320,300.
But with agency financial support, Department of Corrections
in-kind support and early donations and sweat equity, we will only
need $770,000.
Even though our CReWs work daily at on-the-job training
opportunities in the community, the
