OOR at SCI-Albion is a Success

by Joyce K. Wilkes, Deputy for Centralized Services

It has been gratifying to participate in the expansion of the OOR program to SCI-Albion.

Our program offers valuable opportunities to the inmates involved, including learning new skills and giving back to society. Meaningful employment is essential for successful re-entry to the community.

The inmates I have spoken with look forward to working with the instructors each day. I feel it gives the men purpose when they see a family in need benefitting from the program. As the men participate, their self-esteem grows along with marketable skills.

We are fortunate to have a great staff involved with OOR at SCI-Albion. I look forward to participating in this continued successful relationship.

Benefits on Both Sides of the Fence

by Michael W. Harlow, Deputy Superintendent for Facility Management

OOR is a program that benefits both sides of the fence. It provides a labor force for less fortunate Pennsylvania taxpayers and non-profit organizations. In this way, inmates are giving something back to the citizens of the Commonwealth, who pay for their incarceration and treatment.

The inmates involved in this program are able to experience what it's like to be a working productive citizen in our society. Some of the inmates have not had this type of life experience in a community setting, to get up early, go out to a job and see an accomplishment at the end of the day.

Inmates gain a lot from this program that will make them better prepared to re-enter society and live a life which will not include returning to prison. To me, that is one of the main objectives we have as Corrections Professionals.

OOR: An Asset to SCI-Albion and Surrounding Area

by Ronald J. Bryant, Corrections Classification and Program Manager

The OOR program is a valuable training tool for the inmate population at SCI-Albion. They learn a host of marketable skills, ranging from basic items like how to properly hammer a nail, to job site safety, to learning the value of an honest day's work. These skills can lead to employment opportunities or to helping family members with basic carpentry jobs or household projects.

Projects completed by SCI Albion's OOR CreW have assisted individuals and non-profit organizations that otherwise would not have had an opportunity for completion of needed repairs.

The OOR staff who supervise and teach this very important vocational program do an excellent job and are to be commended for their efforts. They serve as positive role models to the inmate trainees as they prepare them for their return to society.
