Successful Re-entry Takes Time and Patience
It has taken time, perseverance and patience, but 15 months after her release from SCI Cambridge Springs Donna Sollers has her new life in order.

“It’s tough, but it’s worth it. You just have to hang in there,” she says,
in talking about what it has taken since July 2007, for her to get a job that she wanted and a place of her own to live.

She left prison with the promise of employment after completing her required rehabilitation program. Before incarceration, Donna worked at a garage as a mechanic’s helper and body shop assistant. One of the customers was pleased with the work that Donna had done on her car.

This customer’s husband owns a construction company. At the time Donna never imagined that this would play a part in her life.
As she neared the end of her two year sentence, her Unit Manager at SCI Cambridge suggested that Donna consider the OOR program.

Donna said that she didn’t want to go to OOR, but the Unit Manager said that she needed more job skills and urged her to try it.
“I wasn’t into it at first,” she said, “but when we started doing dry wall [at the My Father’s House of Erie project] I started getting into it. The finishing reminded me of auto body work and I liked that.”

As her release time neared, she contacted Mike Shimp, owner of Shimp Remodeling. His wife was the satisfied customer whose car Donna had worked on.
Shimp offered her a job when she was released. When she left rehab, Donna tried to get temporary jobs until she could arrange her start at Shimp

Remodeling, “I worked in the laundry at a nursing home for one day. When I told them about my record, they let me go.” A mini-mart wouldn’t hire her because of her record and a temporary service told her that their clients didn’t hire anyone on state parole.
“It seemed like doors were slamming in my face,” she said. She picked up some work detailing cars and in March 2007, finally started working for Shimp. She was there for three months and was offered an apartment but had to turn it down because the location was out of her parole officer’s region.
She began the process last summer, of having her parole transferred to Harrisburg, where she could work at Shimp’s Harrisburg sites. Again she worked on detailing cars until both her employment and apartment arrangements were set.
Donna will start her job in early November and will move to an apartment owned by Shimp Construction. She will work on its remodel in exchange for a reduction in rent.
It’s a long story, but she thinks that it might help others getting out of prison to hear that it can be done.

OOR Greensburg

Graduate Employment Update

By Rich Smidtke, Site Manager, OOR Greensburg/Cresson

Fred Perry - OOR Greensburg
Mr. Perry graduated from the Greensburg OOR program and went to work for S.M.H. Enterprises & U.S.A.Windows in Union City, PA.

When I phoned Mr. Perry for information on his progress since completing the OOR program, he was very happy about being mentioned in the Newsletter and began thanking me and the staff for giving him the training and tools necessary to start a new prosperous life in the construction field.

He said that soon he will have his own crew and more responsibilities, with a substantial increase in his paycheck. I also talked to his mother and she told me that Fred is a different man than the one she used to know. He goes to church every Sun- day, never misses work and continues to praise the OOR program for his new improved life and bright future.

I told Mrs. Perry that OOR provided the instruction and training, but that Fred dedicated himself to learning everything that he could while he was with us.
