Operation Outward Reach 2003 Annual Report

 Training through Community Service

...

D.J. And Kathy Watkins

"I learned about work routine, discipline and working with others," D.J. Watkins replied when asked what benefit he had received from the OOR program. He said that "others affect how you learn," that you can’t focus on your work if you aren’t at ease with those around you. "Imagine being up on scaffolding with someone you have a problem with," he said. "Safety would be the last thing that concerns you."

D.J. credits his adjustment to his current job with Unifirst Corp. in New Kensington to doing projects in the community. He started as a general laborer in June 2002, after his release from SCI Greensburg to a community center, has been promoted to team leader and now route driver. He wants to stay there because "it’s a good company with chances for advancement."

He said that Dave Zik, Instructor and Dave McIlnay, Instructor Aide, did not tell the crew how to do -->

something and then do it another way themselves. "They practiced what they preached."

"D.J. was an exemplary model of how to use the OOR program along with its intrinsic benefits to maximize his potential for success in life," stated Kerry Vance, Site Manager for OOR Greensburg and Cresson.

D.J. and wife Kathy had their first anniversary in February, in the home that they bought last November. He is using his construction knowledge to work on the house.-->

He would tell other inmates that they need patience in starting over on the outside. "It won’t be easy."   He said that support from his mother, father and sisters meant everything during his 10 year incarceration.

Riding to job sites, D.J. would point to any Ford Festiva that he saw and tell Instructor Dave Zik that was what he wanted when he got out. Everyone laughed at his modest aspirations.

Now it gives him great pleasure to fold his 6 foot 2 inch frame into his 1989 Festiva. Another dream realized. Life is good.
